Hard Water & Filter System Care

Hard water is a water-conditioning issue, not a safety one. Filters remove contaminants; softeners exchange hardness ions. The two are different jobs and a filter is not a softener.

Hard water is not a contamination issue

Hard water means dissolved calcium and magnesium. It is generally safe to drink, but it builds scale and can shorten appliance life.

No drinking-water filter that removes contaminants also "softens" water. If you need soft water, that is a water-softener, not a filter.

Do I need a softener before my RO system?

Very hard water can shorten RO membrane life by scaling it. Some households put a softener before the RO. If yours is borderline, monitor the RO output rather than guessing.

Size the softener for the whole house or for the cold line feeding the RO, depending on what you are protecting.

Scale management tips

Keep the cold feed running to the RO; a stagnant warm line is where scale forms.

Descale shower heads and faucet aerators on schedule if you live in hard-water country.

FAQ

Quick answers

+Will a whole-home filter fix hard water?

Point-of-entry filters address sediment and sometimes taste; they do not replace hardness. Softeners exchange cations; filters remove particles and some chemicals.

+Can I run RO on softened water?

Yes, and some households prefer it to protect the membrane. Just avoid softening the whole house unless you need it for your appliances.
