Illinois drinking water

Illinois water quality: reports first, filters second

Illinois utilities publish CCRs that may list chlorine taste, hardness, and — in some communities — PFAS or radium. Wells need their own certified panel.

Watch-fors

What households usually check

  • chlorine taste and hardness
  • PFAS in some communities
  • radium in parts of northern Illinois
  • private-well bacteria and nitrate

Steps

A practical path

  1. 1Download the Illinois utility CCR and scan for PFAS, radium, and disinfectant notes.
  2. 2Private wells: coliform + nitrate minimum at a certified lab.
  3. 3Radium / dissolved ions → point-of-use RO is the usual drinking-water path.
  4. 4Taste-only carbon pitchers do not address radium or PFAS unless the listing says so.
