Storage tank or on-demand pump? How the choice changes cabinet space, first-glass taste, wastewater ratio, and who should skip each design.

The difference is a pressure tank

A tank RO makes water slowly, stores 2–4 gallons under the sink, and pours fast until the tank runs low.

A tankless RO drops the tank, uses a pump and higher-flow membrane, and frees cabinet volume — but needs a nearby outlet.

Both are reverse osmosis: same membrane chemistry, same need for pre-filters and post-carbon.

Who should buy which

Choose tankless if the cabinet is shallow, you hate stale first draws, and you have an outlet under the sink.

Choose tank if you want the lowest up-front cost, no pump electronics, or you fill infrequently and like stored volume.

Skip both if you only need chlorine taste removed — carbon is enough.

Flow, wastewater, and maintenance

Tank systems can taste flat after holidays; tankless has no stored bladder water.

Modern tankless units often improve recovery toward ~1:1, but read the model's ratio — marketing headlines lie.

Tankless adds pump/board failure modes; tank systems eventually need tank replacement (~5–7 years).

Certification honesty

Look for NSF/ANSI 58 (and any health claims you care about) on the exact model. "RO" in the title is not a listing.

FAQ

Quick answers

+Is tankless RO water better than tank RO water?

The membrane does the work in both cases. Tankless mainly changes storage, flow, and cabinet space — not the chemistry.

+Do tankless systems really waste less water?

Often yes because they can recirculate concentrate, but the exact ratio is model-specific. Read the spec sheet.

+Can I add a tank later to a tankless system?

Usually not — they are different products. If you want stored water plus on-demand flow, look at a tank system with a larger tank instead.
